Joey Sollaros has abrubtly returned home to Newcastle, after several years travelling abroad. The reason for his earlier than expected return, is the suicide of his father, Drew Sollaros Sr. Joey still calls him dad, despite the fact that he never really knew him, and he has been in jail for almost twenty years. His father's death, and this new spree of killings dredges up painful memories for Joey's family, placing strain upon his relationships with his mother and brother Drew. All this while a new killer dubbed by the mdeia as "X" is on the loose. Shortly following the funeral, Joey collects his dad's belongings from prison, mostly containing two decades work of letters. Delving deep into the crazed diary entries, Joey learns the very nature of his father's crimes as he preyed upon young women, and the depths of guilt and anguish experienced through two decades of incarceration. A chance encounter with X leaves Joey as a witness to a murder, a lucky escape from certain death, and subsequently in possession of the new killer's little black book. This diary and that of his father's, have very much in common. He takes it upon himself to make a connection between the two killers, putting himself in a precarious position as he withholds valuable information from the authorities. Hot on the trail of X, and suspicious of Joey's involvement is Detective Waters, an obsessive, loosely-wired bloodhound who always gets his man. The detective, Joseph and his family are all tied to his father in some way, and through the clues in both diaries, the truth will emerge to reveal the killer X. The Sollaros Letters is a story about how the dead never die. Instead, they forever haunt their victims, lovers and children until some sort of justice is exacted upon the world. It is about the ghosts of the past and how they are never far away. It is about the time and distance people put between themselves and the pain of death. It is about the loss of innocence, what it means to be a child, what it's like to have a stranger for a father, and the lengths we will go to in order to protect the ones we love. Joey's voice is of a confused, displaced young man. He knows that good men are capable of doing bad things, and vice versa. The difference is the path a man takes, and how his legacy can only be judged fairly by his children, for better or worse.
